Black =Futures Month

GCVI's annual Black Future Month Assembly is happening this week on February 27. Student leaders have worked hard to put together another educational and celebratory show.  We are also excited to welcome many guest performers to the stage.  

Afro-Tribal Dance is  a local dance group and not-for-profit organization that provides both traditional and modern West African dance lessons to people of all ages within the Guelph area. Their choreography is based on different styles within the African continent, predominantly the West African region.   Binty Koroma, one of the founders of the organization,  is also GCVI graduate. 

  Briana Philips is the owner of Starrz Dance and Fitness and she performs and teaches youth  and adult classes in the Guelph and Kitchener Waterloo region.  She will be showcasing a variety of dances from the Caribbean for the assembly. She is also a GCVI grad. 

Waleed Abdulhamid. With his versatility in playing over 20 instruments, ranging from the guitar, flute to djembe and the tambour, Waleed is an internationally award winning musician. Since his arrival from Sudan in 1992, Waleed has played and recorded with a large number of well known artists, including Motown legends, The Drifters. He is currently a Music Professor at Humber College and the University of Toronto and he is an active member in the Toronto music scene.

  The grade 12 Africentric English class will welcome Kween as a guest speaker. Kween is multi-talented as a dancer, choreographer, actor, directory, producer, and social activist. She is the owner of the  Kween Company and  the past Executive Director and Social Justice Initiatives Coordinator for Guelph Black Heritage Society.   She is the Canadian National Ms., 'Ms. Guelph.  She will come in to talk to the class about her  experiences as a community leader and social activist and share her passion for the arts.
