Hey everyone! You may have heard that Ramadan started last Friday, just after sunset, but what exactly is it? Ramadan is the 9th month of the lunar calendar, where Muslims fast from dawn to sunset—meaning no food or drink during the day. But it’s more than just fasting! It’s a time for self-discipline, gratitude, and giving back to those in need.
Fasting helps Muslims strengthen their faith, practice patience, and understand the struggles of those less fortunate. At the end of the month, Ramadan concludes with Eid al-Fitr, a big celebration with food, family, and community.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, and Ramadan Mubarak to everyone observing!

• Clare "Fair-and-Square-But-You’re-Goin’-Nowhere" Fedy tripped, gripped, and made sure no one slipped past!
• Ivy "Kurglowicz the Quick-Kick, Sick-Trick, and Chaos-Klink" Kurglowicz clicked, kicked, and left opponents tricked!
• Harper "Fast-on-the-Track, Steady-Attack, No-Turning-Back" Fedy zipped, whipped, and never quit!
• Gwen "Wreckin’, Checkin’, No-Second-Guessin’" Rankin wrecked, decked, and left no one unchecked!

MSA
On January 29, 2017, six Muslim men were tragically killed in a shooting at the Quebec City Mosque in an act of violence and Islamophobia. The Green Square Campaign honors their memory, with the green square symbolizing the mosque’s carpet where the victims last stood in prayer. This campaign serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of hatred and intolerance. Today on behalf of the MSA, we ask you to reflect on the importance of unity, understanding, and the need to combat all forms of discrimination in our society. If you are interested in learning more or grabbing a pin to show your support come by to the front of the Aud today during break. Thank you.

Thank you to those of you who participated in Children’s Grief Awareness Day yesterday.
Here are some practical tips for how to support a friend who is grieving:
-Reach out regularly
-Don’t assume you know what they want or need
-Be specific when you offer to help…and follow through
-Treat them like you’ve always treated them. They don’t want to be known as the kid whose mom (or other family member) died.
-Remember that your friend won’t be sad all the time; they still want to have fun, play, hang out and laugh.
-Sometimes they will not be up to socializing, and that’s ok.
-Grief is not a straight path; honour where they’re at today.

Today is Children’s Grief Awareness day.
By the time they are in high school, most young people have experienced the death of someone they care about; perhaps a grandparent, aunt or uncle or classmate.
It is estimated that 1 in 14 children will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the time they turn 18.
So today, let’s honour our grief or show our grieving friends and classmates that we support them. You can do this in a number of ways in the hallway outside the guidance office. This will be available throughout today, and remain up tomorrow.
-Light a candle to remember someone you have lost
-Decorate a glass candle holder in their memory
-Make a leaf in honour of your person and hang it on our Tree of Remembrance
-Write a message of support for grieving students in our school
I hope you will come, either with friends on your lunch break or quietly on your own throughout the day to take a moment for yourself or someone you care about.

Tomorrow is Children’s Grief Awareness day.
Sometimes people are not sure how to support someone who is grieving. On Thursday, we will have several ‘tip sheets’ available on how to support a grieving person. Here are a few quick and important ones:
Don’t say:
-Be strong
-They’re in a better place
-Keep busy
-I know how you feel
Instead say:
-I don’t know what to say.
-How are you feeling?
-I’m here to listen.
-What can I do to help?
-Tell me about the person that died
Tomorrow as we acknowledge Children’s Grief Awareness day, there will be an opportunity to write a message of support to grieving people in our school. Please join us in the hallway outside of the guidance office to show our support to our fellow Gaels living with loss.

Today is National Grief and Bereavement Day.
Bereavement is the experience of losing someone important to us. It's characterized by grief, which is the process and the range of emotions we go through when we experience a loss.
If you are bereaved and grieving a loss, please know that you are not alone. It takes courage to speak about your grief experience, but it can be helpful. There are classmates, teachers, guidance counselors and of course Bill and Lori in guidance who will listen and support you. We have a grief club here at GCVI. There are community agencies specializing in children’s grief and mental health support and hotlines you can call such as Here 24/7.
Grief can feel lonely and isolating, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Join us on Thursday outside the guidance office for an opportunity to honour our grief and mourn our losses.

This week, we acknowledge both National Grief and Bereavement Day and Children’s Grief Awareness day.
Grief is a common experience we will all share, yet it can often leave us feeling disconnected. We might feel disconnected from our loved ones, from our friends, or from who we used to be.
Together, let’s break the silence surrounding grief. Let’s remember those we love and have lost. Let’s reflect on how we can support someone else in their grief, and ourselves in our own way.
On Thursday, there will be an opportunity for us to acknowledge our grief and remember those we have lost. Stay tuned for details.

MSA
Hey Gaels! In celebration of Islamic History Month, we’re excited to share some facts about a Muslim figure who contributed greatly to the fields of science and mathematics. Ibn Sina (pronounced: Seena), a brilliant thinker from the Islamic Golden Age, made huge contributions to science and philosophy way before similar ideas surfaced in Europe. He had early ideas about gravity, suggesting that things naturally move toward the Earth's center. Ibn Sina also stressed the importance of observing, experimenting, and using logic, setting the stage for what we now call the scientific method—long before Europe adopted it. His thoughts on motion, which touched on ideas like inertia, came more than 600 years before Newton’s First Law. He also made important contributions to optics, including the use of lenses to improve vision. Sadly, many of his achievements, along with those of the wider Arab-Muslim world, have been overlooked or forgotten in history.

Boys Soccer
Last night, your boys soccer teams competed in the semi-finals against Centennial. In senior action, the historic season came to a premature end with a disappointing 2-1 loss. The boys should be proud of their numerous accomplishments throughout the season.
In the junior match, the boys found themselves losing 1-0 with 90 seconds to go. Zak Sang made a brilliant run from the backline and hit an absolute screamer into the top corner to send the game to extra time. In extra time, once again Centennial struck first and were winning 2-1 until Rayan Huq prevailed in a scrabble in front of Centennials goal to make it 2-2. In penalty kicks, it was all about our keeper Surya Joy. He dominated and stopped 3 of Centennial's 5 penalty kicks which sealed the victory for GC. We now move on to play St. James tomorrow night in the finals.
