The Guelph Collegiate-Vocational Institute Major Awards Criteria

Please take a few minutes to review the criteria for the major awards to be presented at the Awards Assemblies.

Students, teachers, and staff, are encouraged to submit nominations in one or more of the award categories. Staff advisors are asked to nominate members of their organization whom they deem worthy of an award.

The major awards for which students, teachers, and staff, may submit nominations are listed below, along with the criteria for winning the award.

The Promeritus Bowl, which is awarded by the Student Senate to a senior graduating student, is the highest award that a student may win. Qualifications include:

• Leadership among the student body

• Participation in a number of extra-curricular activities

• Promotion of school spirit

• High scholastic achievement

The Peter Stefanyk Award is given in memory of Peter Stefanyk, an outstanding student during his years at GCVI. This award had been donated by his graduating class of 1970. The award may be won only  once, and may be withheld any year that a satisfactory recipient cannot be found. Qualifications include:

• A senior student in Grade 11

• Conscientious attitude toward academic studies

• Contribution to the promotion of school spirit

• Involvement in one or more school clubs or groups

• Gaining and maintaining the respect of both staff and students

The Odysseus Cup is presented to someone who, through individual effort, has shown excellence in an activity that extends beyond the school, thereby promoting the good name of the school in the community. Other things being more or less equal, the graduating student will be preferred to others, and may be withheld if no student is deemed worthy of its reception. Qualifications include:

• At least a 60% average

• Maintaining a level of excellence in the activity

• The person must compete on an individual basis (the “star” of the team is not eligible)

The Citizenship Cup is given to a student in a current executive position. A cup may be awarded more than once, and a maximum of five cups may be awarded in a given year. Qualifications include:

• Outstanding continuous contribution to school activities

• Successfully fulfilling an executive position in the current year

• Promoting the activity among the student body

• Providing leadership and encouragement within the group

The Principals’ Award is presented to students in Grade 9 and 10 who have demonstrated a high level of achievement and participation. A maximum of ten awards may be granted in a given year.  Qualifications include:

• High level of extra-curricular involvement

• Leadership

• Good citizenship

• Excellent contributions within the classroom and dedication to their studies

The Participation Award is granted to a student who has participated actively and continuously in one or more school activities. A maximum of ten awards may be granted in a given year.

The Club of the Year is presented to an active and involved group which has provided services for the student body, thereby creating a good public image. This award is presented by the Student Senate to the most deserving club or council.
