Land-Based and Indigenous Education

UGDSB Land-Based and Indigenous Education at Akinomaagayegaamikoong (‘Place of Learning’)

The Upper Grand District School Board offers Land-Based and Indigenous Education programming at Island Lake Conservation Area as a partnership between UGDSB and the Credit Valley Conservation (CVC). Island Lake Conservation Area borders the Town of Orangeville and Mono Township. The program is a collaborative initiative between the Indigenous Education Department and the Program Services Department. All programming at Akinomaagayegaamikong is co-developed with the Indigenous Education Team to meaningfully and appropriately weave Indigenous Knowledges and pedagogies into the programs offered to students across all grade levels. At the heart of the programming at Akinomaagayegaamikong are the residencies offered by Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community partners who spend extended time offering programming for UGDSB students to help them learn about the diverse and distinct Knowledges held by Indigenous Peoples throughout what is now commonly called Ontario.

Some of the programming options include Indigenous Ingenuity, Navigation and Mapmaking and Water (nibi & ohné:kanos) is Life.

Educators can access additional information and sign up information internally on the Land-Based and Indigenous Education Page on The Educator Hub.
