General Education Development Certificate
Pearson VUE GED Testing Service (GEDTS) will cease to provide GED testing in Canada as of Spring 2024. Candidates must register to write the GED by January 31, 2024 and must schedule their test dates by March 31, 2024. After this date, Canadians will no longer be able to schedule a test date.
The GED or General Education Development is an alternative for those not interested in obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. When you pass all sections of the GED test, you will earn an Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate. The certificate can help you get a job in many sectors as well as admission to post secondary programs if you score high enough in the required sections.
The GED is administered through the Independent Learning Centre (ILC), and it is the only provider of the General Education Development (GED) testing program in Ontario. There are regular testing times at both Conestoga College and at Georgian College. You must register to take the test through ILC.
The fee for writing the ILC test is $100.
You must meet certain eligibility requirements to write the GED test:
be at least 18 years of age
have been out of school for at least one full year
not have graduated from high school
be a resident of Ontario
You can take the test in English or French. Special editions and testing accommodations can be made for people with special needs and physical or learning disabilities.
You can get help in preparing to write the GED in all of our Skills Upgrading Program locations. Many people who start out wanting to take the GED test, find that with a goal of going on to further education in college, working towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma makes the most sense.
