Policy 518 Supporting Students with Serious and Potentially Life-Threatening Medical Conditions
Policy Statement
The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) supports students with potentially life-threatening medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, epilepsy and other conditions that pose a serious medical risk, so they can fully access school in a safe, accepting, and healthy learning environment that supports well-being and empowers them to reach their full potential for self-management of their medical condition(s).
Supporting these students at school requires a collaborative approach involving students, parents/guardians, the principal, school staff, and community partners. Through the development and implementation of individualized plans of care, the UGDSB is committed to minimizing risks for students with serious and potentially life-threatening medical conditions and works to ensure the appropriate school staff are trained in prevention strategies, recognizing the signs and symptoms of medical incidents and emergencies, and how to respond effectively.
