Policy 502 Child Abuse and Protection
Policy Statement
Every citizen in the community shares a responsibility for children’s well-being. Employees of the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) share in this collective community responsibility for creating safe, nurturing, positive, and respectful environments for children. Under the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA), this responsibility includes the requirement for the public, including professionals who work with children, to promptly report any suspicions that a child is, or may be, in need of protection from abuse and/or neglect to a children’s aid society.
Educators, principals and other board employees are in a unique position to identify a child who may be experiencing or at risk of possible physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and/or neglect. Identifying and reporting concerns about child safety and well-being requires every individual to take appropriate action.
It is the policy of the Upper Grand District School Board to provide appropriate procedures, curriculum, and resources to support employees, students, and parents/guardians in the education, recognition, and prevention of child abuse (i.e., physical, emotional, and sexual) and neglect, as well as the reporting obligations of employees.
