This spring, students across the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) got a major boost to their hands-on automotive education, thanks to a generous donation from Ford Canada Auto.

Ford Canada has donated over 200 pieces of high-quality automotive teaching equipment—including engines, transmissions, starters, brake calipers, and more—to UGDSB secondary schools, supporting transportation programs in classrooms across the board.

Among the recipients was Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute (GCVI), where students eagerly unpacked their new gear.

“With the grade 10s, I do a small engines project with lawn mower engines,” said GCVI Transportation Teacher Mark Hammett. “But these new engines allow us to branch out for the grade 11s. Students with more experience can now work on full-sized automotive motors and learn from real, live car components. With things like brake calipers and starters, we can go beyond the theory and take them apart right at our desks—learning the function of each individual component.”

GCVI’s share of the donation included seven engines, 10 brake calipers, 10 starters, diesel fuel injectors, valve bodies, and a gas engine turbo. The donation not only enhances the quality of student learning, but also offers valuable, real-world training experiences that are critical to pathways in the skilled trades.

“This is a great example of how the board is taking creative steps to enhance student learning without impacting school budgets,” said Chad Voisin, UGDSB’s Manager of Procurement.

Excitement around the new tools was evident. “Mark has let me know that the Ford engines have arrived and it’s like Christmas,” said Frances Norlen, UGDSB Student Senate Advisor.

The UGDSB extends a heartfelt thank you to Ford Canada Auto for their continued support and commitment to student success.

Their donation will have a lasting impact on transportation programs across the district—driving curiosity, skill-building, and opportunity for years to come.
