Students from the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) showcased their talents and dedication at the Skills Ontario Qualifying Competition held on April 5 at Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario.

Due to the growing popularity of secondary-level competitions, Skills Ontario hosts qualifying rounds to determine which competitors will advance to the provincial stage. This year’s qualifiers featured a variety of skilled trades and technology contests, including Carpentry (Individual), Culinary Arts, TV and Video Production (Team of 2), and Welding.

Eleven UGDSB students traveled to Barrie, supported by their teachers and coaches, and delivered exceptional performances—securing spots at the Provincial Skills Competition in Toronto on May 6.

UGDSB Qualifier Results:

  • Carpentry (Individual): Cole D., College Heights Secondary School (Coach: Carol Beatson)

  • Culinary Arts: Bridgit K., Guelph CVI (Coach: Tekin Guroluk)

  • TV and Video Production (Team of 2):

    • Erin J. & Priya M., Guelph CVI (Coach: Mike Chaves)

    • Ethan M. & Ryan S., Westside SS (Coach: Lachlan Mackintosh)

  • Welding: Hemani S., Orangeville DSS (Coach: Richard Alexander)

These student successes are a testament to their hard work and the strong support of the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs.

Congratulations to all UGDSB participants, and best of luck to those heading to provincials in May.
