Lauren (Xuyi) Zheng

A Grade 9 student at Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute has been invited to write the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO) in March.

Lauren (Xuyi) Zheng will partake in the 3-hour long competition along with 99 other students from across Canada.

Zheng, who is equally nervous and excited about the challenge, says her mom started teaching her math at an early age and that she’s always had an interest in the subject.

"Lauren is an exceptional mathematician and student. Her invitation to write the prestigious Canadian Mathematical Olympiad is a testament to her dedication and passion for mathematics and learning, inspiring her peers at Guelph CVI," one of Zheng's teachers says.

"As a Grade 9 student, she has already begun to lead, motivate, and encourage fellow math contest writers. We are incredibly fortunate to have Lauren as part of our school community."

The CMO is run by the Canadian Mathematical Society and is Canada’s premier national advanced mathematics competition for students in high school. According to the CMO website, the top students can “expect great scholarship and recruitment offers from universities.”

Students who finish with the top marks will also be short-listed for the Team Canada selection at the International Mathematical Olympiad
