The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is proud to recognize Black Brilliance and Black Futures Month this February.

While this month serves as a dedicated time to celebrate and reflect on the immense contributions of Black individuals, UGDSB is committed to honoring Black excellence every day of the year.

This year’s national theme, "Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations," underscores the importance of acknowledging the past while inspiring future leaders.

Throughout the month, students and staff will engage in school-wide assemblies, speaker panels, and dynamic presentations led by influential Black voices, including Tracy Cain, a renowned storyteller and advocate; G.E.T. Outreach, sharing insights on community empowerment; and Sean Mauricette, an acclaimed artist, educator, and motivational speaker.

These events will foster meaningful conversations around Black history, culture, and identity, ensuring that students gain a deeper understanding of the impact Black leaders have had on Canada and the world.

Some schools will mark the occasion with Pan-African flag-raising ceremonies, symbolizing unity, pride, and the district’s commitment to celebrating Black excellence. Additionally, classrooms will explore the work of Black authors, scientists, artists, politicians, and athletes, highlighting their achievements and contributions to society.

Ongoing student-led initiatives will further enrich the month’s celebrations, featuring:

  • Themed activities focused on Black music, movies, art, and literature.

  • Posters and announcements showcasing influential Black leaders and cultural milestones.

  • Musical explorations highlighting the impact of Black artists across genres.

Black student leadership groups will play an integral role in these celebrations, creating spaces for dialogue, collaboration, and advocacy. Their voices will lead discussions, projects, and initiatives that uplift and amplify Black experiences within our schools.

While February provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Black history, brilliance, and joy, UGDSB is committed to ensuring that this work continues throughout the year.
