A group of students learn in a forest

Centennial CVI CELP students have been busy teaching Grade 4/5 EcoStars this fall in the beautiful old growth forest and Gosling Gardens at the University of Guelph Arboretum.

Grade 10 students learned and have been teaching a program focused on biodiversity where the Biodiversity Team of Food, Water, Shelter and Space battle the Human Impact Gang Habitat Loss, Invasive Species, Climate Change and Pollution.

Grade 4/5 students get to experience a pond study where they learn about food pyramids and bioaccumulation. At the pollinator station they learn about how different landscapes support pollinators and design a school yard to support biodiversity. At the web of life they get connected in a food web and learn about interconnections and how matter cycles, energy flows and life webs in ecosystems.

After listening to a message from Anishinaabe Environmental Scientist, Brad Howie about how to enter the forest, they do sensory activities to get to know the trees of the Victoria woods better and what they can do to help our forests.

At the end of the day students do a solo spot and make a pledge to support biodiversity before heading back to school. Over 687 Grade 4/5 students got to do EcoStars this fall from Kortright Hills, Westwood, Rickson Ridge, Sir Isaac Brock, John McCrae, Brant Ave., Guelph Lake, June Ave., Elora , Mitchell Woods, Willow Rd, Ken Danby, Edward Johnson and Rockwood Centennial.

Way to go EcoStars!
