Chalkboard that says concussion with a whistle, September 25, 2024 is Rowan's Law Day #RowarnsLawDay

On Wednesday, September 25, Upper Grand District School Board schools will be raising awareness about concussions as they mark Rowan’s Law Day.

In 2013, 17-year-old Rowan Stringer passed away as the result of head injuries sustained while playing rugby. Since 2018, the last Wednesday of each September has been designated as Rowan’s Law Day in Ontario and is used to help raise awareness about concussion safety.

Rowan’s concussions went unreported, and she continued to play rugby. During her final game, Rowan received a fatal injury known as Second Impact Syndrome and passed away four days later.

Through learning about Rowan’s Law, we can change Ontario’s culture around sports, physical activity and injury by increasing concussion awareness and knowledge.  It is important to remember that if you experience a head injury, speak up and seek help.

The goal of Rowan’s Law is to make it easier for those who experience concussions to speak up, get help and take the time they need to recover.

Let us know how you are marking Rowan’s Law Day by using #RowansLawDay.
