June marks a month of intentional celebration and learning of 2SLGBTQIA+ people, history and futures in the Upper Grand District School Board.

In addition to individual school initiatives and resources, all schools have been provided with materials and resources, focused on 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, histories, pronouns, allyship, community events, UGDSB events and more.

To kick off Pride Month, UGDSB schools and sites raised the Pride Flag. Many schools’ GSA student groups hosted their own flag raising celebrations this year.

The month of June is an opportunity to intentionally continue the learning and celebration taking place in schools throughout the school year. School GSAs, students and staff have been providing opportunities to learn and celebrate 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and history in many ways for many years. Much of the work taking place throughout the month is student-led and centres student voice.

“I am really happy that we were able to do this [event] because I know in a lot of past schools, they never did anything like this. It really makes me happy that they are and that I was able to participate in it, especially being able to talk about things like the Stonewall riots and teaching people about that, because I know that not a lot of people may know about it. I’m happy we were able to do this on the first day of Pride Month.” ~ Jax, student at Palmerston Public School.

“Pride is a good thing and it’s going to be here forever. Nothing can get rid of it. It’s here and it’s now, and it’s going to be here as long as we are here.” ~ Harry, student at Palmerston Public School.
