GUELPH, Ontario – A teacher in Guelph is hoping to inspire students to achieve their goals, while celebrating the perseverance of Terry Fox, in a running event that will involve several Guelph schools.
On September 26, Rickson Ridge Public School teacher Brandon Rees will set out on a run that will stop at 16 schools in Guelph.
For the past two years, Rees has set challenges for himself at Rickson Ridge PS on Terry Fox Run Day, with the hopes of inspiring young kids to set goals and push themselves to achieve them, while also celebrating the legacy of Terry Fox.
For one challenge, Rees ran a marathon around the school (64 laps). Last year, he challenged himself to run as many kilometers around the school as possible in two hours.
“I am inspired to an amount beyond words by Terry Fox and what he attempted to do in running across the nation over 40 years ago as cancer slowly took over his body,” said Rees.
For this year’s challenge, Rees will run to 16 Upper Grand DSB schools, connecting his school community with the communities around them, and encouraging students and staff at each school to join the activity with a quick cheer or photo as Rees continues his route. The total distance Rees will run is approximately 35km.
