GUELPH, ON – The Upper Grand District School Board is pleased to announce that we have received approval, with additional funding, from the Ministry of Education to proceed with the South Guelph Secondary School and Centre Wellington Elementary School projects.

At Upper Grand, we are pleased to announce that we have obtained an approved building permit for the Centre Wellington Elementary School, projected to be open for the 2025/2026 school year. Additionally, we are continuing to work with the City of Guelph on obtaining a building permit for the new Guelph Secondary School. Should there be no delays in obtaining the building permit, we will be on track to open the new school in September 2026.

The UGDSB knows what this news means to students and their families, and we look forward to the opportunity to bring these new learning environments to students in Guelph and Centre Wellington.

“As a father, I understand that the local school really is the heart of the community, and that it’s so important for young families to have a school that’s close to home,” said Todd Smith, Minister of Education. “Our government is listening to hard-working moms and dads, which is why we are delivering two new, state-of-the-art projects: the South Guelph Secondary School and the Centre Wellington Elementary School for Guelph and Centre Wellington families, along with increasing funding, staffing and a back-to-basics focus on reading, writing and math to help ensure students graduate with the fundamental skills they need to succeed.”

We wish to thank the Government of Ontario for their continued support as we grow the Upper Grand District School Board.
