GUELPH, ON – This summer, various workplaces across the Upper Grand region are offering unique co-op experiences for students from the Upper Grand District School Board. Co-op placements for students this summer are in many different fields and students have been having a blast learning about fields that interest them. Let’s look at some of the opportunities students have had so far this summer.

Ferris D at Masterpiece Lasered Wood

Ferris D is thriving at Masterpiece Lasered Wood in Guelph, learning the art of laser cutting and engraving. His daily tasks include cutting, printing, and assembling wooden pieces. Under skilled guidance, Ferris is enhancing his technical skills and creativity, while also learning about customer interactions and order management.

Ryan W and Isaac S at Code Ninjas

Ryan W and Isaac S are immersed in coding at Code Ninjas in Guelph, helping teach younger students through fun projects. They assist with coding exercises, provide support, and troubleshoot simple problems. This placement deepens their coding knowledge and hones their leadership and communication skills.

Charlotte is experiencing the fast-paced world of emergency services with Guelph-Wellington Paramedics. Her co-op placement involves shadowing paramedics, learning about emergency response procedures, and assisting with basic tasks. Under the mentorship of experienced paramedics, Charlotte is gaining hands-on experience in emergency care and understanding the importance of quick decision-making and teamwork in high-pressure situations.

Nathan L is gaining insights at Sylvan Learning in Guelph, assisting with lesson materials, helping students, and observing tutoring sessions. Under experienced educators, he learns different teaching methods and manages educational resources, gaining valuable administrative skills and a deeper appreciation for education.

Connor, Laura, Steven, and Thomas are having a unique experience as they do their co-op placements together. They are immersed in the dynamic environment of RWDI, a renowned engineering consultancy in Guelph. Their roles involve getting an introductory understanding of engineering work. They are learning about the company’s projects, observing the workflow, and assisting with basic tasks. Under the mentorship of experienced engineers, these students are gaining exposure to the different aspects of engineering consultancy. They participate in site visits, help organize data, and assist in preparing materials for reports. This placement provides them with a glimpse into the engineering field and helps them understand what it’s like to work at a prestigious company.

Adam H at Wellington County Roads Division

Adam H, is making an impact at the Wellington County Roads Division. His placement involves shadowing professionals and participating in “ride-alongs” to observe road maintenance and management processes. Adam assists with inspecting road conditions and helps with minor repairs. Working alongside experienced professionals, Adam is gaining practical insights into civil engineering and public infrastructure management. This experience teaches him about road maintenance planning and execution, and he learns about compliance with safety standards. Adam’s co-op placement fosters a strong work ethic and a deeper appreciation for community infrastructure.

Farhan H at Volkswagen Dealership

Farhan H is thriving at Volkswagen Guelph’s dealership mechanical shop. His co-op placement focuses on automotive repair and maintenance. Farhan’s responsibilities include diagnosing vehicle issues, performing routine maintenance, and assisting with complex repairs. Under the guidance of skilled mechanics, Farhan is developing a solid foundation in automotive technology. He is learning to use diagnostic tools, understand vehicle systems, and provide excellent customer service. This hands-on experience is not only enhancing Farhan’s technical skills but also fueling his passion for the automotive industry.
