Policy 217 Human Rights: Code-based Discrimination and Harassment
Public Consultation and Policy Feedback
Public consultation on this new policy is now open.
Feedback will be received until May 8, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. EST.
This new policy addresses human rights; the inherent rights of all individuals in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) community to be treated with dignity and respect, honouring the principles of equality, equity and non-discrimination. The need stems from the existence and impacts of historical and ongoing systemic discrimination and oppression, and the legal duty of the board, as a service provider and employer, to support and protect the human rights of all members of the UGDSB community.
This policy aims to help UGDSB students, employees, families, school volunteers, trustees, service providers, and community members understand their human rights, roles, and responsibilities in learning and working spaces, and establish a process for addressing complaints of discrimination and harassment based on grounds protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code that is fair, equitable, and carried out in a timely manner.
This policy is important to students, employees, school councils, parents, guardians, community partners and members of the local community because ensuring safe, healthy, equitable, welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and accessible learning and working environments free from discrimination, harassment, bias, and oppression requires the cooperation of the entire board community.
