There is a Before and/or After School Program (BASP) component offered at many UGDSB schools. Before and/or After School Programs are provided in these schools by Third Party Child Care Operators and their staff for students between the ages of 3.8 years to 12 years of age (Grades JK-6).
Parents/guardians of children who will be registered in Kindergarten to Grade 6 at schools where a BASP is not already available are asked to complete a Board BASP survey. The survey is to be completed in January during Kindergarten Registration up until the end of January after which point the survey will be closed. The results will assist in determining the potential need for a BASP for the following school year.
Demand and viability are two key components that are considered when opening or expanding a BASP. School Boards work in collaboration with County Early Years Consolidated Municipal Service Managers within their district, and also consult with local Child Care Operators to determine the demand and viability of offering a new BASP and/or expanding existing Programs. A Program is offered only where there is a sufficient need from parents and where there is viability. This means that the results are determined to be sufficient for a Third Party Child Care Operator to provide a Program and that there is a Third Party Child Care Operator able to provide a Program.
