ENG 4U1
This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will analyze a range of challenging texts from various time periods, countries, and cultures; write analytical and argumentative essays and a major paper for an independent literary research project; and apply key concepts to analyze media works. An important focus will be on understanding academic language and using it coherently and confidently in discussion and argument.
Note: This course fulfils one of the compulsory English requirements.
ENG 4C1
This course emphasizes the consolidation of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. Students will analyse a variety of informational and graphic texts, as well as literary texts from various countries and cultures, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical and academic purposes. An important focus will be on using language with precision and clarity and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for college or the workplace.
Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, College Preparation

IDC 4OE – Media Studies
This course is designed for students who enjoy viewing and analyzing film as well as working with computers and various technologies. Students will examine and evaluate various genres of film including Suspense, Blockbuster and Pop Cultural touchstones of various time periods. Students will also have the opportunities to work with digital video and 35mm technology while enhancing their understanding of film editing, elements of propaganda and narrative techniques. Various assignments of the course may be used as portfolio submissions for post-secondary applications.
EWC 4C1 – Creative Writing
This creative writing course is enjoyed by both Academic and Applied students. Most assignments are very short and can, if time is used appropriately, be polished during class.Students will write poetry, short stories and dialogue. These exercises will help college and university students exercise their imagination while polishing their writing skills.
EWC 4U1 – Writer’s Craft
This course is designed for students who have a genuine passion for writing. It is designed around three core objectives: to read a wide range of literature, to learn about the craft of writing through the critical works of professional writers, and to practice the craft of writing and editing.The students will engage in a variety of short writing exercises in class. The course culminates with the creative project, which requires the student to complete a 30-page collection in a genre of his/her choice.
