Norwell District Secondary School held its 28th annual Terry Fox Walk on September 27th. Led by flag bearers, students and staff walked from the school, through Lion’s Heritage Park, past TG Minto back to Norwell to raise awareness and funds for the Terry Fox Foundation.
The Terry Fox Foundation raises money to support innovative cancer research with the goal of improving diagnosis, treatment options, and the quality of life for those currently battling cancer.
This year Norwell raised $2187.50 in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. As an incentive to donate to the cause, leadership students planned a “Soak a Senior or Soak a Staff” event where senior students Ava, Ashley, Cailey and Sarah, along with staff members Mr. Israel, Mr. Holland, Mrs. Cribbin and Ms. Smith volunteered to get soaked based on money donated.
Donating $5 allowed students to pour a pitcher of water on the chosen participant, $10 got you a medium bucket, $20 a large bucket of ice water and if you donated more than $20 an extra large bucket of ice water was provided. (shown in photo). The more money donated, the bigger the bucket!
Mr. Israel raised the most money and received a total of 8 buckets, while Norwell Student Council Co President received 6 buckets of water. In total the “Soak a Senior/Staff” event raised $293 for the Terry Fox Foundation and was a lot of fun!
“Any initiative that we take as a school to raise money in the fight to find a cure for Cancer should be embraced,” said participant Mr. Israel.
Norwell has donated over $100,000 to the Terry Fox Foundation over the past 28 years and will continue to support this cause and the fight against cancer in coming years.
