Wellington Heights is proud to recognize Black Brilliance and Black Futures Month this February. While this month serves as a dedicated time to celebrate and reflect on the immense contributions of Black individuals, Wellington Heights is committed to honoring Black excellence every day of the year. Our teachers will be integrating learning about Black heritage into their various curricula throughout the school year as Black history is also Canadian history. This year’s national theme, "Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations," underscores the importance of acknowledging the past while inspiring future leaders. Throughout this month students may notice us flying the Pan-African flag, and sharing tidbits of Black brilliance and history on the morning announcements - but this important learning will mainly be integrated into the learning students do each day in their various courses which we hope will foster meaningful conversations around Black history, culture, and identity, ensuring that especially our White students gain a deeper understanding of the impact Black leaders have had on Canada and the world. So while February provides an opportunity to shine a spotlight on Black history, brilliance, and joy, please know that Wellington Heights is committed to ensuring that this work continues throughout the year.
