Good morning RCPS families,

We have a busy week with upcoming celebrations!

Diwali: Diwali is celebrated on Oct 31st until November 3rd

Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by many in Canada and in our school community. This year it coincides with another large cultural event, Halloween. We will be recognizing both events to honour all communities in our school. Be aware that students may choose to wear special articles of clothing on that day as they celebrate Diwali with their family, friends, and school. It is not a costume. We wish all families celebrating Diwali, a joyous Diwali.

Halloween:

We invite students to wear school appropriate costumes (no weapons, masks or scary costumes) or dress in orange and black if they choose for Hallowe’en on Thursday, Oct 31st. Staff will share programs and activities in their individual classrooms. All students are welcome to participate and please let your child’s teacher know if your child doesn’t participate in Hallowe’en as alternate programming will be provided to ensure inclusion. It is our responsibility to ensure that school community members avoid using identities and cultures as costumes. This includes appropriative costumes/cultural stereotypes (i.e. cultural garments), body-shaming and objectifying costumes. Such costumes perpetuate stereotypes and can cause harm that can further marginalize and oppress community members. When choosing a costume for Halloween, be mindful of the way your choices impact those around you.

Yearbook photos: We are starting to prepare for our yearbook for 24-25. if you don't want your child/children photographed for the yearbook, please inform your child's teacher and Mrs. Aziz by sending an email to Justyna.aziz@ugdsb.on.ca by Wed Oct 30th. Otherwise, all students will be featured in the yearbook. Our student yearbook club and staff will start taking photos on Thursday.
