EJPS Week at a Glance (Oct 28-Nov 1)
Chers parents,
I wanted to clarify the many questions coming my way about students wanting to wear masks to school on Halloween. Masks cannot be worn while walking on to and off the school grounds at admittance and dismissal times. While at school, masks cannot be worn at recess, lunch, or any other time without teacher permission. Masks will ONLY be allowed to be worn at school during costume sharing time IN the classroom. That might be at a circle time, or at their desks, or an in-class parade. Also, masks must allow for full vision and cannot be gruesome or gory or reference/depict any violence. I hope this clarification is helpful. We will be giving reminders throughout the week about costume guidelines to our students on the announcements and in the classrooms. Safety always comes first! So with that, thank you for your cooperation if you are in the position of negotiating with your child about a Halloween mask at school.
Time is passing by quickly and it’s amazing to realize that we have already had eight weeks of school! Progress Reports will be coming home in about three weeks (Nov 13). I have advised teachers that as this date approaches that they should reach out in the upcoming weeks to any parents whose child they feel might report as progressing with difficulty on the Progress Report and discuss strategies to help the student achieve their full potential. Progressing with difficulty on the Progress Report means that the overall current assessment data (products, observations, conversations) falls below the provincial standard (the provincial standard is B- to B+) and that according to the teacher’s professional judgment they believe the student could potentially not meet the provincial standard by the end of the first school term (end of January/beginning of February). All children learn at different rates and this is not cause for alarm. Progressing with difficulty on the Progress report does not necessarily mean your child is failing in a specific subject area. The Progress Report provides an opportunity for feedback, goal setting and timely interventions if needed. Your child’s teacher will reach out to you if there is a concern.
In other news, I am happy to share that Officer Grant from the GPS mentioned how attentive and respectful ALL of our students were during her presentations. Our students showed the same impressive manners by being great audience members for our spirit assembly this past Monday. Tu es fantastique!! Speaking of good spirit, many of our clubs are up and running and we are seeing those students' lives being enhanced through arts, sports, creativity, and building new friendships. For example, our Grades 5 & 6 Dragon Drumming club, Junior D&D club, and our Jr Girls & Boys Soccer teams are happening in full force at this time. We announce start ups, times and locations for clubs and teams on the morning announcements.
