Sidewalk Safety! Welcome Ms Deter!

We have a new morning Sidewalk supervisor! Aberfoyle P.S. is thrilled to welcome Ms Deter to our team. Ms Deter is on duty Monday, Tuesday. Thursday and Friday from 8 am to 8:45 am.  Her job is to patrol the sidewalk in front of our school to welcome and help students who have been dropped off. She will assist in getting students to the school grounds.  We are in the process of putting together a safety sidewalk patrol group to assist Ms. Deter.  When that is put together, we will let families know how to safely drop students at the school. Ms Deter will also supervise students who have arrived late to school and ensure that they safely arrive into our building.

Crossing Guard News

Please be advised that the Township has informed us that there will be no Crossing Guard Coverage during the following dates:

Lost and Found

Visitors to our school are SHOCKED by the amount of Lost and Found that we accumulate. Even though we regularly display the items and encourage students to claim their belongings, bags and bags of materials remain unclaimed with no way for us to know who it belongs to. This includes expensive winter boots, snow pants and winter jackets!

Parents can help this problem by putting their child’s name (using permanent marker) on their child’s belongings. Staff can then read the tags and return the items, even if the student’s don’t recognize them as their own.

Let’s work together to keep our belongings where they belong.

Visions of Sugar Plums…and brownies…and cookies…and cupcakes danced through the halls of Aberfoyle School on December 12. The students were thrilled to be able to buy a sweet treat and thanks to the 18 wonderful parents, there was lots to enjoy! The Bake Sale was a success! We raised $953.75! Big thank you to our parent volunteers who organized the sale and who came to dish out the goodies for the students! There was a big crowd of eager customers!

Winter Activities at Aberfoyle

The students are really enjoying the snow on our playground! Many students enjoy using our school crazy carpets to slide down our small hills on the Primary side of the playground. While sledding down the hills can be fun, there is a danger of student accidents, regardless of the size of hill.  Students need to sit while on their carpet and students are instructed to move out of the way of the other sleds as soon as they finish their run. Recess supervisors continue to do a great job monitoring the designated sledding area and ensuring the activity is as safe as possible. Students who are not sledding safely will be asked to leave the area. Helmets are encouraged, but not mandatory. If you would like to send a helmet for your child, please put their name in it. Helmets can be stored with their outdoor belongings.

Students love the snow hills for digging and climbing! There is lots of building happening and we love cooperative play! While there is always some disputes about sharing the snow and respecting the work of others, students are learning to be kind and to keep the snow on the ground. Let’s have fun in the snow this winter!

Library Learning Commons:

Aberfoyle PS will be celebrating Family Literacy Day on Thursday, January 23rd! This day reminds us of the importance of involving families in life-long learning and literacy activities. Celebrated across the country in schools, libraries, homes, and community centers, Family Literacy Day is an opportunity to share in the joy of reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing, and representing.

To celebrate, we are having Cozy Up and Read Day on January 23rd! Students are encouraged to wear their PJs, bring a stuffie, and their favourite book (names in it please).  Teachers, please dedicate some time on this day for quiet reading for your students with their favourite book.

Here are some ideas on how to take 20 mins to participate in Literacy Day at home.

Capture Bus

Inclement Weather

It is the parent’s responsibility to determine whether or not it is safe for his or her child to leave for school in inclement or severe weather. A parent must be aware of the following:

When a bus does not travel a route in the morning due to fog, ice, or snow conditions, it will NOT travel that route in the afternoon.

While we have an excellent transportation system, buses may be delayed in the morning due to traffic, poor road conditions, mechanical breakdowns, etc. To ensure your child is not stranded at his/her pick-up point, please make sure they know what to do and where to go if their bus is more than 15 minutes late.

The STWDSTS website (https://stwdsts.ca/)contains the most up-to-date information on school bus delays and cancellations. Cancellations will also be tweeted @stwdsts. An email will be sent to those subscribed to STWDSTS delays and cancellations.

STWDSTS will post information on bus cancellations on their website by 6:30 a.m. Information on school closures due to bus cancellations will also be posted to the STWDSTS website.

Information on transportation cancellations or school closings due to severe weather is also available through CJOY 1460 AM or Magic 106.1 FM in the event of inclement weather. They will broadcast bus cancellations or school closures. Listen for messages for the City of Guelph -Yellow Card.
